When I'm not blogging, I'm browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on August 10th:

  • NASA satellites catch 2 views of Felicia already affecting Hawaii: Tropical Storm Felicia is closing in. Two NASA satellites captured the height and temperatures of Felicia's clouds to assist meteorologists in their forecasts as she approaches Hawaii. She's already stirring up the surf.

  • Tools Help Forecasters Follow Felicia: Meteorologists monitoring Felicia rely on computer models and satellite imagery: the dynamic duo of storm tracking in the 21st century.

  • University of Hawaii tech efforts often miss connections: The University of Hawaii generated 40 percent less money from in-house research and inventions this past year than it did in the previous year.

  • Whale Stranding: Sonar or Lunar?: Researchers studied 23 mass-stranding events involving melon-headed whales to determine at what point in the lunar cycle they occurred. There was no connection with the full moon or any lunar phase.

  • Mysterious affliction called Surfer's Myelopathy can paralyze a healthy body: Defined as a novel diagnosis, Surfer's Myelopathy may be related "to prolonged spine hyperextension while lying prone on the surfboard," according to the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine.

  • UH Manoa researcher publishes assessment of potential invasive snail and slugs pests in the U.S.: A collaborative team led by a University of Hawai‘i at Manoa researcher has published the first-ever assessment of snail and slug species that are of potential threat to the nation’s agriculture industry and the environment, should they ever be introduced in the U.S.
