When I'm not blogging, I'm browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on December 10th:

  • Wide Binary Stars: Long-Distance Stellar Relationships: Using computer simulations, scientists from Hawaii and Finland have figured out how wide binary stars—two stars that orbit each other at a distance up to a light-year—form.

  • Astronomers go infrared to map brightest galaxies in Universe: A group of astronomers from UH Manoa used the twin telescopes of the W.M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea to conduct a census of the brightest, but until now unseen, galaxies in the distant universe,

  • World's Biggest Tsunamis Threaten Hawaii: Unlike tsunamis from earthquakes, the Hawaiian tsunamis strike when the island chain's massive volcanoes collapse in humongous landslides.

  • New Research Underscores Vulnerability of Wildlife in Low-Lying Hawaiian Islands: A new U.S. Geological Survey scientific publication describes the first combined simulations of the effects of sea-level rise and wave action in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

  • Broadband Key Driver of State Economic, Social Growth: Hawaii ranked 48th among states in the 2012 State Broadband Index from TechNet, assessing state policies and business climate that impact broadband deployment and demand.

  • The world's largest commercial aircraft lands in Honolulu: As nice as the 850-passenger Airbus A380 is, Hawaiian Airlines said it may be decades before it considers buying the plane.

  • Pezzuto named AAAS Fellow: University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo College of Pharmacy Dean John Pezzuto has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

  • Soft Open - Innovation Lab, Hawaii TechWorks: We are delighted to welcome you to Hawaii TechWorks’ Innovation Lab, in Hilo, Hawaii, the computing center and coworking space component of our community workshop.
