When I'm not blogging, I'm browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on December 20th:

  • Chromium-6 Is Widespread in US Tap Water: The highest levels were in Norman, Okla.; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Riverside, Calif. In all, water samples from 25 cities contained the toxic metal at concentrations above the safe maximum recently proposed by California regulators.

  • State green tech survey sees growth: A state survey backed by federal stimulus funds predicts that “green jobs” will grow by over 25 percent in the next two years.

  • Makai Ocean gets an extra $1M grant: Lockheed Martin has awarded an additional $1 million to Makai Ocean Engineering to continue developing and designing an Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion pilot plant in Hawaii.

  • How Lockheed Martin is using tropical waters to create clean energy: I recently spoke with Chris Myers, vice president for Energy and Government Programs for Lockheed Martin, about the benefits of OTEC and how it works.

  • Military signals advanced biofuels demand: This week in Honolulu, Chris Tindal of the US Navy joined Jason Pyle and Jonathan Wolfson to discuss providing the US Navy annually with 336 million gallons of drop-in advanced biofuels by 2020.

  • Red shrimp, unique habitats disappearing: Their habitats occur very close to the shoreline. This ecosystem shares a connection to the ocean as well as groundwater. There are only about 1,000 known in the world; 600 of which are in the Hawaiian Islands.

  • Maui student among few chosen to participate in science competition: Kihei resident Michael Flynn, 17, was one of five students from Hawaii selected to represent the Pacific region at the 49th National Junior Science & Humanities Symposium in San Diego.

  • Explosion detection technology could come to Hawaii: The ShotSpotter is used in nearly 70 cities including Oakland, Minneapolis and Washington D.C. Officials from the Honolulu Police and Fire Departments have met with the vendor.

  • Sopogy signs MOU for China Solar Project: Sopogy, Inc. signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Yu Hao Long Corporation, the developer of a patented Stirling energy generator for the installation of a 200MW concentrating solar plant for the China National Utility.
