When I'm not blogging, I'm browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on February 5th:

  • Breaking Down The Tesoro Refinery Closure: The closure of the Tesoro refinery has prompted a three-part series by UHERO Graduate Assistants Iman Nasseri and Sherilyn Wee on what it means for Hawaii.

  • New research shows complexity of global warming: Global warming from greenhouse gases affects rainfall patterns in the world differently than that from solar heating, according to a study led by Bin Wang at the International Pacific Research Center at the UH Manoa.

  • Scientist publishes first climate change textbook for college students: Dr. Charles Fletcher of SOEST at UH Mānoa offers the first real textbook to present the science surrounding climate change at the right level for an undergraduate student.

  • UHMC Holds Dedication Ceremony for New Science Facility: Over a hundred guests attended a special dedication ceremony for the newest addition to the UH Maui College campus, a $26 million science facility.

  • Contest seeks recipes for Mars mission: The HI-SEAS staff and crew are inviting the public to join in on the action by submitting their best recipes utilizing ingredients on the list of items that will be available to the crew during the simulated mission.

  • Planetary System Found in Hyades Star Cluster: By using a very sensitive spectrometer at the Keck Observatory in Hawaii, the team detected hints of calcium in the atmosphere of the star in its death throes.

  • Listen Live to Whale Songs From Hawaii: The gurgles, whistles, and squeaks of humpback whales singing off Hawaii’s island shores can now be heard live, courtesy of underwater microphones placed near Puako, Hawaii by the Jupiter Research Foundation.

  • DNA shows how the sweet potato crossed the sea: In the 'tripartite' hypothesis, developed in the 1970s by the archaeologist Douglas Yen, then at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii, the sweet potato arrived in Oceania multiple times.

  • Hawaii judge demands online travel sites pay $150M in taxes: Online travel companies owe the state of Hawaii approximately $110 million in unpaid taxes and $40 million of interest on sales of Hawaii hotel rooms.

  • Amazing Hawaiian Plant Loved by Tourists but Endangered by Climate Change: Haleakalā silverswords have been a protected species since 1992, although their decline began long before then.
