When I'm not blogging, I'm browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on February 28th:

  • Maui count shows humpback whale numbers growing: Volunteers and researchers tallied 1,607 sightings of humpback whales Feb. 26 from their lookout posts along Maui's shorelines during the Great Maui Whale Count.

  • Bionic leg helps Hawaii rehab patients: The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific in the Liliha area has rolled out two, new bionic legs to help patients undergoing intense physical therapy.

  • Wind energy faces gales: After holding a series of "scoping" hearings on Oahu, Maui, Molokai and Lanai, Kam and other staffers from DBEDT, in partnership with the federal DOE, now have a clear sense of the unease on Molokai and Lanai.

  • 2030 Clean Energy Rebate Program First of its Kind in Hawaii: Hawaii's first rebate program for residential solar electric systems is underway. A quarter of a million dollars in residential photovoltaic system rebates is available in Hawaii now through June 30, 2011.

  • Mauna Kea telescope OK'd: The state Board of Land and Natural Resources unanimously approved siting the 14th and biggest telescope to date atop Mauna Kea on Hawaii Island.

  • Telescope Breaks Record for Most Asteroids Found in One Night: A telescope high atop a volcano peak in Hawaii has set a new asteroid-hunting record: 19 space rocks discovered in one night, the most ever by a single telescope, astronomers say.

  • SOEST hosts vog forecasts study: A feasibility study to determine if vog forecasts are achievable and useful is being made available to the public through a new website hosted by the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.

  • Engineering team wins third place in national nanosatellite competition: A team of UH Mānoa electrical and mechanical engineering students won two awards in a national nanosatellite competition held last month in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

  • Successful tech transfer leads to more Hawaiian exports: Hawaii growers can now export more fruits and vegetables to the U.S. mainland, thanks to technology advanced by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists and cooperators.

  • Hawaii Announces Plan to Establish CIO Office: Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie announced Monday, Feb. 21, that it plans to establish a CIO office. The announcement was made to the Legislature and Hawaii citizens in the executive branch budget plan.

  • The final frontier: Astronomers would be able to peer farther into space and back in time under a plan that would add the 14th and biggest telescope to date atop Mauna Kea on Hawaii island.

  • Liquid Robotics Lures BP, Navy, NOAA With Wave-Powered Glider: Unlike other unmanned devices and gliders,, the Wave Glider needs no fuel and captures energy from the environment, converting wave motion into thrust and harvesting sunlight via solar panels to provide electricity for sensors.

  • Hawaii to get new sustainable learning facility: The Mālama Learning Center is the result of a shared vision to create an innovative learning center on Oahu to promote healthy, sustainable living in an island environment.

  • Budding scientists compete at Maui Science Olympiad - LahainaNews.com | News, Information, Lahaina and Western Maui, Hawaii — Lahaina News: Young scientists from middle and high schools on Maui recently converged at the University of Hawaii Maui College to compete in the first annual Maui Science Regional Tournament.

  • Smart-phone application tracks Honolulu's traffic: Chang created the free "Hawaii Traffic Cams" app for Android. Telling a few Facebook friends and his co-workers was the extent of his marketing effort. To date, it's been downloaded more than 10,000 times.
