When I'm not blogging, I'm browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on February 4th:

  • Daniel Ho and Hawaiian Music at the Grammys: The reality is more complex, involving issues endemic to Hawaii: the tension between culture and commerce, authenticity and appropriation. So the last six years’ results have stirred up a larger question of who gets to make real Hawaiian music and by what standards it should be judged.

  • Hawaii earmark beneficiaries ready for moratorium: Honolulu-based high-technology company Oceanit won't be getting the $10 million Inouye had sponsored for the 2011 budget that would have helped the company develop a system to track satellites and space debris - something akin to an air-traffic control system for space.

  • HR Biopetroleum takes over Cellana: HR BioPetroleum, Inc. announced that it will acquire Shell’s shareholding in Cellana, a joint venture between Shell and HRBP. HRBP will become the sole owner of Cellana, including its six-acre demonstration facility in Kona.

  • HECO successfully tests 100% biofuel in electricity generator: Hawaiian Electric Company has successfully used 100 percent renewable biofuel to fire a petroleum oil-fired steam turbine generator. The tests found that using biofuel reduced opacity and emissions of nitrogen oxidesand sulfur dioxide.

  • Venture Capital Deal of the Year Awards 2010: The Hawaii Venture Capital Association announced the winners of its annual Venture Capital Deal of the Year award for 2010. The honor is given to Hawaii companies that have raised notable amounts of investment capital in the previous year.

  • Making Academic Connections: The Kohala Center is excited about its newly formed partnership with the University of California, San Diego. Staff from UCSD visited the island in December to explore potential sites for a new field-based Global Environmental Leadership and Sustainability Program.
