When I'm not blogging, I'm browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on January 25th:

  • Hawaii falls behind nation in science knowledge: Hawaii fourth and eighth graders performed below national scores on a national science assessment. The average score for Hawaii eighth graders in public schools was lower than those seen in 41 states and higher than only one.

  • On the ball: Since the towering ballistic missile defense radar first arrived here in January 2006, it has become a loyal return visitor, shunning its foul-weather Aleutian Island home port so completely that it has never even moored there.

  • Puppy Cams Threaten Internet, Cisco Says: Network demand will explode, fueled by unexpected growth in ambient video, like puppy cams and surveillance video, according to reports from the 33rd Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC) conference held last week in Hawaii.

  • Hauʻoli Mau Loa rescues threatened plants with $600K gift: The Lyon Arboretum’s Lab is vital in preventing the extinction of native Hawaiian plant species by maintaining plant and seed bank collections, and propagating plants for use in restoration and reintroduction projects.

  • CEROS awards contracts to 14 firms: The National Defense Center of Excellence for Research in Ocean Sciences has awarded more than $6.9 million to 14 Hawaii projects involving maritime technology.

  • The partial death and refocus of Blue Mars: Avatar Reality’s CEO Jim Sink has announced the cessation of development of the PC application version of virtual world Blue Mars, with the soon to be smaller company moving to focus on developing for the iOS.
