When I'm not blogging, I'm browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on January 9th:

  • Honolulu water is safe, health director stresses: The level of a toxic chemical in Honolulu's drinking water found by an environmental research group is "not a huge problem," although government testing is continuing, said state Health Director Neal Palafox.

  • Strange Mini-Asteroid Born by Huge Space Rock: The new asteroid was discovered by researchers from the University of North Dakota and from the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Germany, using NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility on Mauna Kea, Hawaii.

  • Plan to buy HEI draws skepticism: A startup company's proposal to take over Hawaii's major power supplier and take it private faces so many hurdles that some experts question whether it will ever get off the ground.

  • Telescope Calibration May Help Explain Mystery of Universe's Expansion: The NIST scientists traveled to the summit of Haleakala volcano in Hawaii to fine-tune the operation of billions of light-collecting pixels in the Pan-STARRS telescope, which scans the heavens for Type IA supernovae.

  • HECO will power up with biofuel: Hawaiian Electric Co. has signed a contract to buy 16 million gallons a year of locally produced biofuel to power its generators in a move that will allow the state to take a big step toward reducing its dependence on fossil fuel.

  • Verizon sets sights on Hawaii for 4G: Honolulu, Kahului, and Lahaina are among the 140 new markets in which Verizon Wireless plans to roll out its 4G LTE network, company officials announced today.

  • Sniper detection device tested in Waikiki: Three gunman, armed with blanks and posing as snipers, fired toward the convention center. A new device uses infrared technology to instantly determine where the shots came from and what kind of weapon was fired.

  • UH Mānoa breaks ground on Translational Health Science Simulation Center: The new $7.5 million center will be established in the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene, and will serve as a campus hub for translational health science research, simulation and research education.
