When I'm not blogging, I'm browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on July 6th:

  • Temporary Bottom Fishing Ban Begins: Starting Monday some of the most popular and sought after fresh fish entrees wont be local. A temporary bottom fishing ban goes into effect. Meanwhile there’s a proposal on the table to increase the current catch limit next season.

  • Old army maps find peacetime role: Environmental research and disaster-prevention are among peaceful goals Japanese researchers are striving for as they peruse thousands of topographic maps of the Asia-Pacific region produced secretly by the Imperial Japanese Army.

  • New Mobile Phone Service Launches – Literally: Imagine if you could provide coverage to the Continental United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Hawaii and Alaska in just one day. TerraStar did exactly that on July 1st, 2009 by launching TerraStar-1, the largest commercial satellite ever put into space.

  • Fireworks Display In The Helix Nebula: A new image, taken with an infrared camera on the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii, shows tens of thousands of previously unseen comet-shaped knots inside the Helix Nebula.

  • Movement to shut down shark tours in Hawaii grows: Shark tours have become a popular visitor attraction in Hawaii, but a movement is gaining momentum to shut them down. Some Native Hawaiians consider sharks to be ancestral gods and view feeding them for entertainment to be disrespectful of their culture.

  • Astronomers discover pair of solar systems in the making: Two University of Hawai'i at Mānoa astronomers have found a binary star-disk system in which each star is surrounded by the kind of dust disk that is frequently the precursor of a planetary system.
