When I'm not blogging, I'm browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on March 16th:

  • New species of bamboo coral identified off Hawaii: Scientists have identified seven new species of bamboo coral discovered thousands of feet below the ocean's surface. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the six of the seven species found off Hawaii may represent entirely new genera, calling it a "remarkable feat" given the broad classification a genus represents.

  • Pending bills, rules would help 'green' energy: There are bills in the Legislature and dockets at the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) that could pave the way for a cleaner, greener renewable energy future. Perhaps the most potentially significant change in policy for Hawaii (which is currently before the PUC) is a concept called "decoupling."

  • Radiometrics accurately measures rocks’ age: One independent validation of radiometrics comes from the geological studies of erosion on the Hawaiian Islands. The islands’ erosion scars get progressively deeper as one travels from Hawaii’s southeastern islands to its northwestern ones, evidently because the islands toward the southeast are newer islands and the ones to the northwest are older.

  • New monitoring equipment keeps a close watch on volcanoes: Researchers from the Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden have developed monitoring equipment to measure the levels of sulphur dioxide emitted by volcanoes. The equipment will be used on 17 of the world's most active volcanoes and the results obtained will help scientists to predict volcanic eruptions and improve global climate models.

  • Finalists Unveiled for the Third Annual RFID Journal Awards - RFID Journal: Best RFID Implementation: State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture (DOA): The DOA was chosen for developing a system to identify and pull contaminated products before they reach consumers.

  • Hawaii Hosting Official U.S.-China Energy Meeting: Hawai‘i will host the Second Bilateral Meeting of the U.S.–China Cooperation on Electricity from Renewables from March 15 to 21 at the Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism offices in Honolulu and at the University of Hawai‘i - Hilo.
