Inadvertent data exposure by UH West Oahu affects Manoa students: The exposure occurred when a faculty member inadvertently uploaded files containing data including names, social security numbers, addresses, birth dates and educational information to an unencrypted faculty web server.
Science Olympiad nets $300,000 grant: The Hawaii State Science Olympiad has received a federal grant award totaling over $300,000. The award will be used to operate and expand the Science Olympiad program in Hawaii.
NASA Survey Suggests Earth-Sized Planets Are Common: Nearly one in four stars similar to the sun may host planets as small as Earth, according to a new study funded by NASA and the University of California.
Hawaii's Largest Concentrating Solar Power Project Announces Groundbreaking: Sopogy, Inc., a leader in micro Concentrated Solar Power technology, will be supplying its proprietary solar thermal collectors for a five-megawatt MicroCSP plant, which broke ground on October 27 in the Kalaeloa district of Oahu.
Little fire ant infestation eradicated: An infestation of little fire ants on Maui has been eradicated, the state Department of Agriculture announced Thursday. The department credited the success to its rapid response and the development of innovative pest control methods.
State to Promote Renewable Energy on Neighbor Islands: The Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) has awarded $2.1 million in federal stimulus funds for energy storage demonstration projects on Hawaii Island and Maui County to increase the grids’ ability to integrate more renewable energy.
Coral algae discovered in black corals at never before seen depths: Surprisingly, 71% of the examined species were found to contain algae, even at depths approaching 400 m. These black corals exhibited very similar traits to those of corals commonly found in shallow-water (use of algae).
