When I'm not blogging, I'm browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on October 20th:

  • Geek Week and Mactoberfest 2009: Hawaii Geek Week is October 17-24, 2009, offering fascinating evening presentations and a full day event on Saturday: HMAUSs Mactoberfest with Leewards Geek Day at Leeward Community College.

  • Isle roots run deep in AIDS vaccine study: The three doctors in charge of the U.S. Army's HIV research program, which ran the study along with the Thai Ministry of Public Health and other collaborators, all went to high school in Hawaii.

  • CTAHR researchers request public's help in locating wild honeybee colonies: The UH Honeybee Varroa Project is conducting an island-wide study on viruses in honeybees transmitted by the varroa mite. The number of wild honeybee colonies has decreased dramatically, impacting pollination of many crops grown in Hawaii.

  • San Diego company acquires Ulupalakua wind farm project: San Diego company Sempra Generation announced Thursday that it had acquired Shell WindEnergy's Auwahi project at Ulupalakua Ranch and could start feeding electricity into Maui Electric Co.'s grid by 2012.

  • Hawaii to receive $29 million for energy and water projects: Efforts to mitigate flooding in Hawaii and further harness the power of the sun, wind, water and earth to create sustainable energy alternatives to imported oil will receive more than $29 million

  • IceCycle: A Retrofit: If it works, it could help continue to popularize one of the more intriguing ideas in air conditioning. Ice air conditioners produce heat at night when power is cheap. During the day, the chill from the melting ice is conveyed via heat exchangers through a building to cool it.
