When I'm not blogging, I'm browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on September 17th:

  • Hawaii professor wins competitive research funds: The National Science Foundation has awarded a University of Hawaii physics professor nearly $220,000 to develop a new type of particle detector.

  • National Institutes of Health awards $9.2 million to UH Manoa: The National Institutes of Health recently awarded a $9.2 million grant to UH Manoa as part of the IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE).

  • U.S. Department of Defense Announces Latest Contract Awards: Watts Webcor Obayashi is being awarded a $158 million contract for the construction of a replacement hospital in Guam. The work to be performed provides for the construction of a new replacement Naval Hospital.

  • Native Hawaiians: Vulnerability to early death at all ages: Throughout their lives, Native Hawaiians have higher risks of death than white Americans. The research is the first known study to assess mortality patterns at the national level, including those living outside the state.

  • Clouds Are Shaped by Where They’re From: Atmospheric scientist Anthony Clarke of UH collected samples over the Pacific Ocean. The study found that aerosol particles that result from human activity are just the right size to interact with light and build clouds.

  • New book chronicles small satellites: A new book in the emerging area of small satellites was just published this week. The book was co-edited by UH Professor Wayne Shiroma, who established UH’s small-satellite program ten years ago.

  • 18 State-Led Energy Efficiency Programs Recognized As Best In U.S.: Hawaii's Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism (DBEDT) was named one of the top five energy efficiency programs by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE).
