Dog's Law
Duane "Dog" Chapman. "Dog the Bounty Hunter" on A&E. I guess this is what they mean by "guilty pleasure." So much about the show is ridiculous. And a lot of what comes out of Duane's mouth (and Beth's) makes me cringe. And yet... And yet... It's Tivo'd and watched religiously.
Today's Honolulu Advertiser has a great article on Duane. Considering the flack he gets for how local culture is depicted, I thought it was pretty enlightening to read about how he sees his place in Hawaii.
"I had no idea until I came that it was the same kind of syndrome as the American Indian: someone came over here and took the land. And I'm part of that someone and now I'm here... We're not trying to represent like we're Hawaiians. We're from Hawai'i, but we're not of Hawaiian blood. Even though we may want to be, we are not."
He berates himself for mispronouncing Hawaiian words. He thinks our cops aren't half bad, considering. He thinks our criminals are surprisingly tough. And he thinks Honolulu could go the way of L.A. if we're not careful.
Hmm. I feel a little less silly for watching the guy's show.
