The Online News Association is hosting two days of digital journalism training at the East-West Center next month. Offered in partnership with the Hawaii chapters of the Asian American Journalists Association and the Society of Professional Journalists, the "Parachute Training" program will take place Jan. 21 and Jan. 22.

The training will cover mobile production, free web tools, business models, and career skills and legal issues. Specific sessions include:

  • Social Media as a Reporting Tool (Robert Hernandez, USC Annenberg)

  • (Mostly) Free Tools to Kick Your Site Up a Notch (Robert Hernandez, USC Annenberg)

  • What You Need to Know About Internet Law (Jon Hart, ONA General Counsel, via Skype)

  • Video Sessions (Tiffany Campbell, The Seattle Times)

  • Better Blogging (Trainer TBA)

  • Data Visualization (Trainer TBA)

The training is free, and registration costs only $10, which covers breakfast and lunch. The ONA can only accept 120 participants, so register online now to ensure participation.

ONA's "Parachute Training" initiative is supported by a grant from the Gannett Foundation "to help digital journalists and fill the voids in areas hard hit by media organization closures and job losses." We've certainly seen a lot of those here in Hawaii.
