The state's "Furlough Friday" calendar has locked Hawaii students out of classrooms and created the shortest school year in the nation. But this Friday, April 30, middle school students (in grades 6th through 8th) have a unique opportunity to continue learning, and expand their familiarity with science and technology, through Sci-Tech Day.

The free, full-day program includes several classes spanning life sciences and biotechnology, renewable energy, engineering, and software development. And it is being offered at three locations: Honolulu Community College, Leeward Community College, and Windward Community College. Lunch will be provided, courtesy L&L Hawaiian Barbecue.

A total of 80 students can be accommodated at each learning center, and there are still spaces left at all three. Advance registration is required. Call (808) 536-4670 for more information.

"Many of us in the science-technology industry want to give back a day of education, especially in light of the continuation of Furlough Fridays," said Keiki-Pua Dancil, CEO and president of the Hawaii Science & Technology Institute. "Science and math are not usually viewed as fun subjects, but we want to show students how science and technology are essential to our future and just how fun it really is."

Sci-Tech Day is a joint project between the Institute and the University of Hawaii. Sponsors include Hawaii National Bank, Women in Technology, Alaka'ina Foundation, Shee Atika Technologies, Wall-to-Wall Studios, and Go! Mokulele Airlines.
