Locals know how to "talk story." And often, it's more than just "small talk." Beginning next week, the National Storytelling Network's Pacific Region will be coming to the Aloha State to celebrate the art of storytelling, and Hawaii's ancient traditions of oral histories will be showcased.

The five-day Talk Story Conference will be held from July 16-20, 2009 at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel.

"You like to hear stories, right?" asks local coordinator and veteran storyteller Jeff Gere. "At this conference, you’ll find the broadest variety of cultural backgrounds, personal styles, story themes, and 'wise ones' yet to come to these shores."

Participants will be coming from across the country, as well as Japan, Thailand, Canada, and Australia. Each day's program -- featuring keynotes, panels, and presentations -- runs from 8 a .m. to 10 p.m., with special concerts on Saturday and Sunday nights.

"This is an unequaled opportunity to soak in an ocean of storytelling," Gere gushes. "They all just want to be here, and you can join in this 'yak fest' too! It’ll never be closer to your door again."

The kama'aina rate to attend is $100 for all five days, or $30 per day, with discounts available for students and librarians. A separate Maui event is being held from July 23-27, 2009. Details and registration forms can be found on the Talk Story Conference website.
